Setting up a subdomain

Your subdomain will usually be your-service-name.education.gov.uk. This subdomain is controlled by the central infrastructure team and a delegated namespace is created for the Schools Digital infrastructure team to set up on your behalf.

You should have decided your service name during the Alpha phase but you may find that this hasn’t happened until the start of Beta. A lot of things depend on the name of your service some of them can be changed easily but the DNS delegation is one of the more difficult elements to manage, so it is worth spending the time to get this right.

Sub-domain length

A domain name has a maximum length, as well as each segment of the domain name. Therefore to allow for subdomains the service name as it appears in the URL should be less than 40 characters.

Your environment names also need to fit into the overall name.
